Do you think the new good quality food will prevent my dogs from eating cat crap?

I recently switched from cheap food, to canidae for my dogs. I did this because.....(and tell me if I'm wrong)

a) I read up on the "filler" in cheap foods, w/no protein b) the protein in the new food may replace the protein the dogs "liked" in the cat crap c) the vitamins in the new food may help the dogs coats to shine d) my mom said that cat litter will thin out my dogs hair (my dachshund is balding on his chest).

It can't hurt. Better food is just all around better for dogs for obvious reasons, but it may or may not help the kitty-box-crunchies situation. Some dogs just love to eat cat crap, excuse me while I vomit.

If your dog's hair is thinning, that has nothing to do with kitty litter. It is more likely an allergic reaction, infection, mites, etc. I would talk to the vet before that gets worse and see what he recommends. All you can do to make sure the dogs don't get to the litter box is to put it somewhere that the dogs can;t go, like on a table or use a baby gate to keep the dogs out of the room because cats can easily jump a baby gate.

try putting Tabasco sauce on cat crap works wonders for the problem

Probably not. For a lot of dogs cat poo is like crack! You just have to prevent the dog from getting to the kitty box.

LOL, I am sorry to laugh and it isn't about your situation, but your phrasing. I haven't heard anyone refer to poop as "Crap" in a while, it always makes me chuckle, I dunno why.

I think you are correct in your reasoning, but if it doesn't stop, you may have to get creative with the placing of the litter box so your pup can't get at it!

i boosted up my doggies food from innova to canidae....they absolutely love their canidae, but it still doesnt stop them from trying to get the cat crap...

lol, I swear it's a treat to them or something! Over the years I've found the only thing I win by doing is to keep the box scooped well and block off the box leaving a small area open that the dogs can't fit through.

I don't know if it will work, but probably not. Every dog I have ever had, and even my friends' dogs, all like to eat cat crap. Why I don't know, but they just did. I don't think that they are looking to fill a deficiency, but they are just gross. Expensive food didn't help me out any.

The only solution we found to this was to get one of those cat boxes with a lid that allowed the cat in, but was to small for the dog to get in. Either that or we put the box where the dog couldn't get to it.

Since you did say your dog has thinning spots, he may have a vitamin deficiency or he may have allergies to his current food, so it couldn't hurt to try the new food for that reason.

Any kind of hot sauce on the **** will really annoy the dog, and make 'em shy away from it, if he's got brains. The reason dogs eat cat poop specifically is because Cat food is really high in protein compared to a Dog's food. Any protein that isn't digested/used in their body is passed through their system, and the dogs or other animals sometimes eat it, for the protein. So switching to a dog food that is higher in protein will definitely help.

Although, I must suggest that you feed your dog a raw-meat diet, it's the healthiest way to feed a dog.

I dunno ... My dogs are right now eating Canidae, but they still both think the cat's litter box is the buffet from heaven. Ewwww, huh?

That's just dogs for ya. If it stinks, they love it.

I'm finding that the Canidae is helping with my dog's skin and coat, though. He was pretty dry and flaky, and not so shiny. Since switching foods, that has pretty much cleared up and he looks a lot better. I think it's a pretty good food. Both of mine like it a lot better than the Eukanuba I'd been feeding them. Ohhhhh, but they still raid the litter-box every chance they get!

Canidae will definetly help. It's the second best thing I've seen on the market next to Innova Evo. The brands you find in a grocery store are full of fillers that don't benifit your dog but just make him feel full and poop more. Canidae has more nutrients and is more digestible and should help the problem.

Dogs eat poo because they still smell undigested food. It looks gross and is gross, but the dogs nose is much different than ours. Where our nose can smell beef stew, a dogs nose can smell beef, carrots, onions, celery, and potatoes.

Try getting a cat food that aids in digesting more food. If he can't smell food in feces, he will not eat it.

The food change is great. Will it stop your pup from eating the crunchy little tootsie rolls? Nope! This is dessert for some dogs. Get a litter pan with a cover. The thinning of the hair is not caused by kitty litter. It may be a food allergy (something in the cheap food that you feed). Give the canidae a few weeks, if the hair is still a problem see your vet.
