Take your puppy to the groomer. Keep the hair at a length that you can maintain at home. Sounds like a dog that will need to be kept in a "puppy cut" so that you can keep this from happening between appointments with the groomer. Ask the groomer what grooming tools (combs, brushes, etc) you need at home to keep the dog's coat healthy.

You have to keep him brushed out and if the knots are to solid get your mom to help you cut them out. After that keep him brushed at least once a day.

You have to brush regularly (and in many cases daily) and if you can't maintain the longer coat, they need to be clipped by a groomer every 4-6 weeks.

Brush and groom him often. Clip out any knots from his hair. They can cause "ulcers" soars in his skin.

You need to groom your puppy. If you comb him on a regular basis his coat won't get matted. Since he already has matts your best bet is to take him to the groomer and him them either clip him or remove the matts, clipping will most likely be less expensive. Once the matts are gone you need to comb him out daily to keeps his coat from matting again.

You have a couple options with this. You can either get your puppy's hair cut short so that he does not have the fur to get matted or you can brush his fur daily to help avoid the mats.

Okay you answer yourself and don't know it. A. every dog sheds. They need to be brushed to get the excess fur off. Some dogs need to be brushed every day. Just like a person with long hair, if you don't than you will get knots. B. Dogs should not scratch. This scratching is causing more matts. If a dog is on a good diet than he will not scratch but once and a while. Also a good diet will help the fur stay Strong and smooth and not get clumpy. Try solid gold, azmira, nature's variety, canidae any of these you will notice a difference. You want a food with no corn, wheat or soy. If you need more advice send me a message with how old your dog is and what breed he is. Also if you smoke than do so outside as this will destroy your hair and the dog's

Certain breeds need to be brushed more than others.

Try brushing him everyday. Also if you can't brush the mats out CAREFULLY cut the matted part of and make sure it's just hair. Buy a doggy hair brush from the local pet store and start brushing.

I have a Cockapoo that had matted fur, you need to brush their hair OFTEN! Don't ignore the fur, brush it regularly.

OK, first off, all dogs shed, the reason you are not seeing shedded fur in your house is because it's staying caught in his growing fur. This is what is causing most of the matts.

To get rid of matts and keep them away you should take your dog to a groomer the first time, they can tell you if it is brushable or if it will have to be clippered off. Brushing out a severely matted dog is TORTURE! and can take hours and hours. After the groomer gets the dogs coat under control you can keep your pup from getting matted with regular brushing, daily or every other day. Get a Slicker brush or a pin brush, not a soft bristle brush, this will not get into your pups coat it will only do the very top layer. Here is a link to a grooming page for long haired dogs, with lots of advice and pictures.

Hope this helps.

PS NEVER "Cut" matts off of a dog, it can be very difficult to tell where the matt ends and the skin begins, if you are not experienced at grooming you will end up cutting your dog.

Take him to a groomer and have the mats taken out. Mats can actually make your dog lose his hair. If a dog is prone to matting, proper grooming and brushing is very important.

All dogs shed. Many poodle mix are said to be non-shedding because the hair follicle lets go of the hair, but the hair doesn't actually fall out because they are so hairy - it gets trapped in with the other hair.

Matting has to do with grooming. You should be brushing your dog every day (maybe even twice) to get rid of the loose hair, and to prevent mats. Also your dog should be seeing a groomer about every 6-8 weeks for a good haircut.

Added:

Even my 9 month old chocolate lab gets a daily brushing just to remove loose hair. It's just good habit to brush your dog every day regardless of what kind of coat they have.

you may have a dog that needs to be brushed every day to prevent mats. or maybe a short haircut so the hair can't get tanngled. if you bath him yourself use a conditioner but that only does so much.

My dog, a little yorkie-poo, had matted hair at first when she was a puppy. We took her to the groomer, and they had to take a lot off, but when it grew back, it was soft and nice. Also, after grooming, use a wire-pin brush to control knots in the fur.

One from the above link would be perfect (top left); it's small but durable. Scroll down that page to purchase for $4.99, or you can buy one just like it at your local pet store.

Good Luck!

a product that works on horses is Cowboy Magic. It is a de-tangler and conditioner. It might help tame some of the mats. It smells good and is not greasy. I think the website is
