My dog is chewing on his tail and pulling the hair out why is he doing it. he's a husky?

my dog is a husky and he's suposse to have a big fluffy tail but he is pulling the hair out of it so it looks like the fur has been cut and stumpy. and i don't know why he's doing this. i thought he would stop doing it after awhile but he's not he just keeps pulling out the hair and chewing on it he's been doing this for over a year so i'm starting to worry.

He may have a skin allergy or a case of hypothyroidism. "Hot spots" can cause him to pull his own hair out in order to stop the itching and burning. Of course this will make it even more irritated. Try taking him to a vet to see if there really is a skin condition, or if there is a way to keep him from doing it. You could possibly wrap the tail in gauze to keep him from biting it until after you've made an appt. with the vet.

Does he do it chasing his tail?..( ihad a lab do it) or is he chewing like it itches.....if its been a year..its prob not mange..but could be a nerve problem, i would ask a vet in severe cases the dog will maul its own tail...nreed ing amputaton.

Have you brought him to the vet to see if it's caused by a medical problem? Possibly allergies? If it's not medical, there are sprays sold at pet stores that you can spray on his fur (make sure to read the label carefully) that will keep him from chewing on his fur.

Good luck!

i definitely think it is an allergy...i would go to the vet...if his back hind is balding i have seen many cases of mange....but chewing on the tail is prob an allergy

He probably has some sort of allergy. I would try to spray some cortisone spray on it to relieve the itching. You should really take him to the vet to get tested for allergies. If my dog gets bit by a flea he will get red eyes and his nose will start itching. He also chews on his tail. If it is fleas all you can do is control the environment. Treating just him isn't enough because what they are allergic to is the fleas saliva. So if you have them in the carpet or in the yard they are still going to jump on him and he will still have a reaction when they bite him.

It could even be a food allergy. You might want to try to put them on a diet without wheat or flour. I have a beagle that has that one.

It's been over a year and now you worry? Please! One main indicator of a thyroid problem in dogs is they gnaw their tail non-stop. Nothing works. No fleas. They just gnaw the tail. There can also be changes in behaviour/personality.

I went silly for a few months watching my pit doing this. Tried everything. Even took up the carpet to eliminate any fleas. Can't fuss at you because I should have known sooner myself.

Our country vet took one look and did the bloodwork. They also gain weight bad. Might be harder to tell with all the fur yours has. Get him to the vet and make sure he tests thyroid first. Look for internal cause for itching. If all that is fine then I would question a nerve problem in the spine that is causing a pain or bad sensation in the tail. Like when your foot falls asleep and you rub it to get the circulation going. Even a hip problem. Good luck. Hope he gets better.
