What mid-size dog has long hair and good for an apartment?

I live in an apartment which is big enough to raise a large size breed, so don't worry about the exercising part, I will walk the dog everyday. And furthermore, the dog needs to be quite, not barky.

Well, I would advise you to stay away from the terriers as they tend to be more active and barky. Long haired medium sized dogs do include many spaniels, which tend to bark much less than many other breeds. I would however visit with the parents of the dog (at least one if possible) and check out the dispositions for myself. The American Cocker Spaniel can be a wonderful breed, they can also be misbred and have questionable temperaments. The standard says that they are a gay and happy breed, which they are and can be quite loving and have wonderful dispositions. They do require grooming, and are considered a high maintenance breed but so does/is anything with long hair. I have owned and raise several Champions in that breed during my life and consider them to have excellent temperaments, however temperament runs in lines (relatives) not just breeds. So if I were looking for an American Cocker I would seek one out from a good breeder who has good temperaments. I would like to ask however that you be certain that you can have a dog in your apartment. I understand that it is wonderful that people in apartments do not want to disturb neighbors and that is a good thing, but having a dog that does not bark does not insure that no one will find out about the dog. For those who want a dog that barks less in an apartment because they are really not allowed to have one, please consider that the dog might not be getting a permanent home, and if it is found out about and evicted than it would have passed up homes as a puppy which might not be fair to the dog.

i had a cockerspaniel when i lived in my apartment. in my opinion they are the best sized dog for an apartment because i made mine take the stairs everyday after our walk and she rarely barked. so a cockerspaniel is a good recomendation.

My suggestion would be something like a Samoyed... they are not barkers. But there are several breeds that would be good and barking is train-able. You can Keep the barking down. If you really don't like barkers... stay away from the terrier breed. However... Fox terriers, Jack Russell, Schnauzers, Westies, and Scotties are very smart dogs, easy to train, and loyal animals. Poodles and Schnauzers, don't shed. Good luck. (Just work on the barking part)

The best dogs to have in an apartment are the giant breeds - Bernards, Mastiffs, Danes.

They are very laid back (some even say lazy - not always true). They are great exercise buddies but don't require a lot of running due to their size.

They are very gentle and fun dogs.

If you're looking for something a bit smaller perhaps a Collie, an Aussie, or just a mixed breed. Take a look at some of the rescue leagues in your area or a shelter. They have AWESOME dogs up for adoption that need a good home and great owner.

Good Luck

Lhasa apsos are medium to small, and their hair can be long if you want (although I find it easier to keep my lhasa mix's hair cut short). They aren't yippy or barky, although they can be if you inadvertantly train or allow them to be (but this is true of any breed). They are watch dogs, not guard dogs. Plus, they don't shed as much as some other breeds do.
