What lotion or shampoo, if any that helps the dog's hair always shiny?

What I use as an exhibitor is Crown Royal Conditioning spray. You can find it online at www.ShowDogStore.com They have good prices and are honest business people. You should bathe your dog and thoroughly dry him before you use the spray to avoid having oils or odor locked inside the cuticle of the dog's hairs. This works wonders for a Siberian Husky, but you need to decide what works for your dog.

It depends on the breed of dog you are talking about on how any product will work. Some breeds are meant to have a wiry, rough coat. Those breeds include terriers, large hounds like Norwegian Elkhounds, Irish Wolfhounds, Otterhounds, and Scottish Deerhounds.

Using a softening agent could potentially damage your dog's coat. Since I do not know which breed you are talking about, I have to recommend that you consult a local groomer. They will know exactly what you should use on your dog's coat.

Not so much a shampoo, but a pet hair conditioner....

my black labrador has always been incredibly shiny... but he drink water almost excessively, so i think thats why. Try and 'trick' him/her into drinking water by dropping treats in there.

not even a shampoo or conditioner...

if your pet is spayed or neutered they have a downy undercoat that appears making the coat dull.

If it isn't then it needs better foold and worming.

The coat is a sign of other problems always

Lotion and shampoo are not a good idea...try a natural way like a raw egg in his/her food and brush them daily .That helps get rid of old hair and stimulates oil glands for a shiny coat.

Brushing it regularly and after shampooing rinse with Apple Cider Vinager, it masts the fur glossy and it helps keep fleas away.

It is always best to start from the inside. Make sure the dog has a good diet, if you feed dry food make sure it is a good quality premium brand. You can add some cod liver oil or even sardines to the diet once a week.

As far as grooming goes, use a mild conditioning shampoo - I like Dermcare Naturals, Fidos or Plush Puppy but it depends on your location as to what is available for you. For short haired breeds you wont need further conditioning but for the longer coated breeds it is wise to use a good conditioner as well to prevent knots. It also depends on the colour of the dog. Black dogs always tend to look shinier.

A friend of ours who is a dog breeder recommended we give our coarse-haired black lab a fish oil pill everyday. We began giving it to him and within days his black hair was shiny as well as dandruff-free! Give it a shot!

I agree with everyone saying start on the inside--a good diet is a must--plus brushing your dog everyday stimulates the oils which makes the coat shiny--my vet told me that the shampoo he recommends just for general cleaning is Baby Shampoo--that is what I use on my 3 dogs.

  1. Most of the time dogs have very naturally shiny hair. If they are healthy it will remain nice and glossy. It's great to see a pretty pet.
