I have an itchy dog with hair loss what can I do to allevite his suffering?

you need to take your dog to a vet and have her thyroid tested, then go from there.

give him a bath and call the vet... there could be a medical problem going on there

It can be food allergies, it can be mites, it could be that you楹搑e washing your dog too often (should not really wash him at all unless he REALLY needs it and then with dog shampoo since their skins ph-level is different from ours and might not tolerate human shampoo very well).

Try ruling out stuff, maybe even stress, and hopefully you楹搇l see a difference! If all fails, or maybe as the first action, take him to the vet, he should be able to tell you.

give him a bath with a oatmeal shampoo and a dog conditioner. also, give him brewers yeast supplements as a treat or in his food, which will help with skin and coat.

also, if he has a kennel or dog bed, wash that too.

Get him to a vet. He may have the mange.

Two schools of thought.

1) You do need a diagnosis that only a vet can provide. Your dog may have hot spots, mites, fleas, mange, thyroid disease, psoriasis, ringworm etc. Once diagnoses, you can often skip the vet visit the next time. Also, the vet can get your dog on anti-inflammatories and antibiotics to help cure it.

2) Home approach. In general, a dog shampoo designed for itchyness with oatmea or coal tar will work and provide temporary relief. This is available at most petstores. You woudl bathe the dog every few days with a soothing shampoo. The problem is that if you have mange, ringworm, mites, etc. you would need a different shampoo, you put yourself at risk for getting it and it will not go away without medication.

It really would be best to get it diagnosed and in the future you will know how best to approach it.

With ours it was usually an allergy to fleas when they did that and it would take a visit to the vet and a shot of cortizone to help. There are other things that could be causing it so the best place to start is a visit to the vet who can then advise you how to best help your pup.

could be fleas, dermatitis, mange. I would take him to a vet
