Has the dog been on steroids for an illness?

If not, the dog is producing too much cortisol which will result in weight gain. A pituitary tumor is likely the culprit.

It's a disease usually associated with the use of steroids or cortisone medications for a LOOOONG period of time or repeated use. (my insaine mother actually claimed to have it after watching something about it on animal planet LOL) Some of the symptoms of cushings disease are gaining massive amounts of weight, having short legs, thyroid and kidney issues and not being able to lose weight. You need to talk to your vet more about it. I only know a little bit since I had to find out what the heck my mum selfdiagnosed herself with after watching Animal Planet(we thought we were safe with that channel!LOL)
