I have a long-haired terrier who is suffering from the summer heat. I want to have her clipped and was wondering if there is any reason to leave any hair on her at all. Will she sunburn with short hair? Any precautions I should take?

you can trim him but don't shave it all, they have hair for a reason. oh, and they are not human so just because he/she has hair and it's been hot does not mean the dog is suffering like humans do. dogs pant to cool themselves when it is hot, so just trim the hair and give 'em plenty of cold fluids ...shaving him won't stop the heat from making him pant like ...well; a dog.

Take her to a groomer at least the first time. They should be able to advise you about proper clipping. You don't want to go too short because dogs can get sunburned. We always got our Springer Spaniel clipped as short as our groomer would allow in the summer to keep him from being miserable.

i have my dog cut short but you should leave about a half inch of hair so your dog does not get sunburned i shaved mine once he got sunburned he'a house dog so keep your's out of sun till some hair grows back

When they shave a dog, there's usually some hair left on their skin. That will help protect from sunburn. Nothing wrong with clipping them, though.

Dogs shed their undercoat in the summer time so that they can keep cool. Some breeds it is not good to shave as they can burn very easily in the sun. I think if you are going to clip her real short, just don't keep her out in the sun for long periods of time.

Ooh, Nooo!! Please don't shave off all her hair.:o) She would look sooo pitiful. Just get her a "puppy cut" for the summer. She will love you for it and you won't have to worry about sunburn or the hair not growing back before cool weather.

She needs a plastic swimming pool (the rigid, preformed pool for children). Keep it filled with clean, cool water. With her new "puppy cut" and the pool, she'll stay happy and comfy all summer.

shaving all of your dog's hair will cause sunburn and also other skin diseases and irritation. of course, get your dog out of the sun and bring him in the house with the a/c on with lots of cold water for him to drink. leaving your dog in the heat will effect his behavior, usually it makes him go crazzzzy and aggressive.
