My Pomarian dog's hair stopped growing in his lower back..why?

The previous answer about mange is true only in part....there are two forms of mange and one is highly contagious to other pets and even humans, it is called sarcoptic mange. The second is demodectic mange. Demodectic mange is caused by a microscopic mite called Demodex canis. All dogs raised normally by their mothers possess this mite as mites are transferred from mother to pup via cuddling during the first few days of life. (After the pup is older it is unable to pick up demodex mites. Puppies raised by hand, do not ever get demodex mites.) For some reason, conditions change in certain dogs to allow demodex mites to "gain the upper hand;" the mites proliferate and can cause serious skin disease. A third answer may be flea/tick dermatitis and is caused by an allergy to fleas/ticks---when a flea bites a dog, the toxin stays in their system for 3 days and cause intense itching and loss of hair. Food allergies are a 4th possible cause...there are more causes out there but these are the most common. Like the previous poster stated, the only sure fire way to determine the cause is to have your pet seen by a vet. After the underlying cause is determined, your vet will guide you in the proper treatment. Best wishes for your fur-kid.

if its patchy it could be Mainge. They don't get it from other dogs, and they are little bugs. But it's not contagious like lice. The only way to tell it to take the dog to the vet and they scrape the skin cells and put them under a microscope.

My dogs are in the same condition, and it is due to the fact they are allergic to flees. I do not if your dog is also, but Just one flee sends there hair elsewhere.
