Will a pit bull do well with a puppy?

My friend has a pitbull and a small terrior. They get along great. Her pitbull is not agressive around people it knows - it tends to snap at strangers who make swift, jerky or assertive movements, but other than that she's a complete sweetheart. She's not so great with other full grown dogs: hair raises, snarling bark, it's hard to restrain her, etc. She's never been around pups.

I'm getting a german shepherd puppy. My friend and I spend a lot of time together and she would like to socialize her dogs - as I would like to properly socialize my little pup. I've heard agressive breeds, usually, are much less agressive with unfamiliar pups than they are unfamiliar adult dogs.

What do you think? Would it be stupid to introduce my dog to this pit? And if you think it'll be okay, what precautions should I take?

They will be fine just introduce them slowly. I have a pit bull and she gets along very well with other pets of all kinds. Pit bulls are more social then people want to realize:)

that pit bull is going to kill that puppy and you know it...or else you wouldn't have posted this.

probaly not pit-bulls are very aggresive well most are you try it then decide

I would not risk having my dog around a dog who is agressive around other dogs.

if ANY dog has a known history of being dog aggressive, i would never risk my dog.

Your dog and your friends dog don't have to be friends they don't ever have to meet eachother. I would rather separate them forever than have a dead dog because they got into a fight.

yeah that's ok I used to have a 11 years old German Shepard(in human years) with a 1 month golden retriver. They work out fine in fact they were probaly father and son. But when you take your dog to your frind's dog put him on a leash and tell your frind to put her dog on a leash too. If everything goes alright then you and your friend can take the leash out and let them venture around. But if things don't go as well then go back home. Just remember to introduce them slowly

You did not say how old the pit is. I would not socialize your puppy with this dog. It could have a bad outcome. You already say that the pit will snap at people who make swift, jerky or assertive movements, puppies do that all the time!

You say that she has never been around pups but she does not like other full grown dogs and she is hard to restrain.

I would not take the chance. I would socialize your puppy first with other puppies and then with dogs that you know could not harm him.

Are there any puppy kindergarten classes in your area? They are offered in many towns and cities by the Parks and Rec department or adult ed. There are also lots of dog training facilities now. Puppy K is a great way to start your puppy in basic obedience and to socialize them with other pups.

First off I would suggest your friend get training for pit. Any human aggression out of a pit is unacceptable and aggression towards other dogs, while not uncommon, shouldn't be tolerated either. Also maybe looking into a correctional collar or gentle leader to make controling the animal easier. I love pits but I also love well behaved dogs. And any dog that shows aggression to humans outside of provocation is not well behaved regardless of breed.

As for the puppy, if the dog respects you it should respect any animal you bring to the group. I would however take precautions when introducing the puppy though. Such as a loose muzzle for the initial introduction just to head off a possible misunderstanding. While most dogs are tolerant of pups I would be uneasy with your friends pit.

I don't think it would be wise of you to "test" this pitbull's social skills on your new pup, especially if your friend has "difficulty restraining" him. She should consider taking him to obedience class, and once you are both confident that she has COMPLETE control over this dog, and is able to restrain him if need be, let him meet your new pup as long as they are both on leashes.

NO!

don't automatically assume your friend's dog is dangerous because its a pit.

i think it might be fine...since it's still not full grown. and if they get along there's less likely of a chance your friend's dog will be aggressive to yours when it's full grown.

i say let them meet each other, but restrain them TIGHTLY on a leash. if your friend's pit starts to growl or has her hair standing up...then it's probably not a good idea. but if they start wagging their tails and attempt to sniff nose-to-nose, then let them. they should then get along great, since this is a sign of greeting to each other.

You shouldn't let them meet each other because if the pit bull gets angry or aggressive the pit bull will do something bad to the puppy.

The problem with puppies are they are small, furry, and make lots of sudden movements and sounds. The problem with most pitties are they have a strong prey drive that is triggered by small, furry, squeaky creatures. Not a good mix. Since this pittie is, you say, hard to control and dog agressive I would not risk your pup unless the pittie got a lot of training first, and even then I would be VERY careful!

We had a pit bull when we got our boerboel. Tank(my pit bull), got along great with our new puppy. Good thing too. My boerboel now towers over Tank at 230lbs. Just supervise as you should when you bring any new animal into the house. Keep the pit bull leashed during the first few introductions, and stay vigilant.

I dont' think its a good idea

IF you decide still to let your pup and the pit meet, DO NOT do it on the pit's turf or on your pup's turf. Meet on neutral ground such as a playground or public park where plenty of other dogs have been so neither dog decides it has to protect its own turf.

Do not let either of the dogs be off leash, and be sure the leashes used are short enough to maintain complete control over each animal. I'd suggest a pinch collar for the pit since you say she's hard to restrain. Personally, I wouldn't do it. I live across the street from a pit who loves me to death, but she does not like my dog - who stays home behind his fence - and the pit charge the fence every time she gets out of her own yard.

Pits are unpredictible when it comes to introducing them to new animals. Just think carefully and be particularly alert to any sudden movement by the pit and pay attention to its body language. Also, go padded; you don't know at what point you may have to put yourself between your pup and the pit if she decides she's not going to like the pup.

Good luck. I'm sure we'll all like to know what you decide - and how it goes if you introduce them.

pitbulls are a gentle dog....NOT!!!!

I am a pit bull owner and as long as your friend is dominate over the pit bull you should have no problems introducing a new dog to her. especially a puppy. the more you socialize them the more comfortable they will become around each other. The first couple of times may be a little weird with lots of sniffing and stuff but as long as both of the dogs know that the humans are dominate they will not challenge each other for the position.
