Of course we'd patch test first...
The dog is frightened of having his haircut as he was nicked once with the scissors. Vet said to put him under anaesthetic, but we'd rather not put him through that.
I'd like to hear from anyone who has experience with hair removal cream on their dog.
Thanks.

Try using a flowbee or even a buzz-cutter thingy...clippers.
You could also re-train him to associate the scissors with good things. Bring out the scissors...do NOT coddle him or act like it's a scary thing. Coddling a dog when they are afraid (of something that is not really a real threat) is reinforcing their scared behavior.
Give him a treat every time he sees the scissors. Do that 100x over a few days...just sporadically bring the scissors out to desensitize him from it and to show him that it's a good thing...scissors = treat :) Start with it far away, but let him see that you have it. Then, when he reacts calmly to that, give him a treat every time he sees it. Then, move closer and repeat and repeat...until he's ok with getting his hair cut with it!
I would NOT try the hair-remover stuff unless you've first consulted with your vet.
Jo...I like the muzzle idea! That's always an option...muzzle him and get it over with quickly.

NO NO NO you do not want to do that,, it is cruel, painful for the dog etc.. why do you want to take all the hair off the dog?? keep the dog going to the groomers, if you cannot do it yourself, she will eventually learn to deal with it..

I definitely wouldn't try it.
It gives most people I know a rash. It's definitely gonna give your dog a rash.
Why don't you take him to a groomer who knows what they are doing?
Groomers are very experienced with every type of dog %26amp; know how to get even the most skittish dog to tolerate grooming.

Considering how miserably poor that stuff works on humans - and it's designed for humans - there's no way I would try it on a dog.
It's irritating, corrosive, and doesn't do that good a job anyway. Anesthesia would be kinder.

Never, your vet can give you the best advice. Find a groomer that works with these problems.

No you don't want to do that, it's poison, it will soak thru their skin. Leave the poor dog alone, that's torture.

Why in the world would you want to do that? That borders on potential animal cruelty. Nothing like risking chemical burns. I would suggest hiring a good trainer or behaviorist to work on counter conditioning and desensitizing your dog to the scissors or to a clipper.

I could only imagine what would happen. Your dog is going to be terrified of that burning sensation, it will probably have a real nice skin burn from the chemicals.
Dogs are not normally frightened after one nick with the scissors- it may be the groomer. Not all dogs and groomers mesh well. Try taking him just for a bath a few times, then add a few more services.
I would much rather see a dog put under anesthesia than suffer chemical burns.

THAT'S MEAN!!
Has anyone tried hair removal cream on a dog?
Most definitely not. If it was okay for dogs they would have them for dogs. Check Petsmart. Don't use your hair removal creams ,or butters ,or sprays.

No no no! That stuff is AWFUL and would probably cause burns on your dogs skin.
Here is my suggestion - most groomers are slowest on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday in the morning. See if you can get the first appointment available on one of those days. The groomer would be able to work slowly on your dog, allowing him time to get comfortable with his surroundings and the groomer. Ask the groomer if you can stay (ask when you book the appointment - not when you show up - some salons won't let you stay)

I am a former dog groomer. Do not use hair removal cream because there are SO MANY negative consequences to this! If your dog is very skittish about being groomed and has matts, then let your Vet anesthetize the dog and groom him. Either that, or find a dog groomer that works with fearful dogs and can groom your dog with use of a muzzling device and without anesthesia.
Sorry your dog was cut by scissors once. Your dog can overcome this fear if you find a good groomer that the dog gets used to.

No I haven't and I wouldn't

i have and why not keep it's hair. because sometimes when removing the skin they can get rashes. If it is young do not it needs its hair. Also the dog may experience throwing up.
