she ate a "busy bone", which is soft, earlier in the evening. sometimes she tends to lick the rug, which has dog hair on it, after eating a treat. when she is sleeping she doesnt cough but when awake she has this raspy, deep cough. it is not continous but often. i tried to look in her throat %26amp; do not see anything. she doesn't cough when you rub the throat either. she is up to date with all vaccinations. could she have a hairball like a cat? or can she have a cold? she was in the car with the windows down a little yesterday and it was 45 degrees. could she have caugh a cold?being christmas eve i cant take her to the vet til tuesday. do you know why she is coughing and can i give her anything? i am pretty positive it is not kennel cough since she isnt nor has been around other dogs. she is eating like normal but has seemed to drink more water than usual today. she coughs so hard sometimes its like she is trying to bring something up.
Last night my golden ret. started to have a raspy cough. she shows no signs of not feeling well?
It is unlikely that her exposure to the cold has caused any illness. BUT that doesn't mean she isn't sick. It sounds like she has some irritation of her throat, likely not an actual sickness (you said she is quiet when she sleeps).
Just my opinion, but I would say keep a close eye on her and make sure she has plenty of water, as she is drinking more often. If the cough worsens or she starts to look like she is in any more distress, find an emergency vet and take her immediately.
If not, be sure to keep your appointment with your regular vet.
Good luck.

Could be something in her throat, like carpet fibers or hair, or it could be serious, like heartworm. I'd take her to the vet, especially if you're in an area where heartworm is prevalent and she hasn't had a blood test or been on preventative.

Probably a virus, similar to a cold. She doesn't actually need to be near other dogs to get kennel cough. She'll get over it.

I guessing that she might just have dry throat being around winter and all.But there have been cases that dogs spas out thing like cats. If she keeps "spasing" like that rush to the vet on Tuesday.

Go to a vet, the coughing could be problems with the heart. This could be one of the signs of Congestive heart failure. One way to tell is doing a x-ray, to tell how the heart looks.

dogs don't need to be exposed to other dogs to have kennel cough.
it could be the soft palate bending and the dog hacking to get it to go back.
dogs do not catch colds.
