Why does my dog loose all her hair in the summertime?

my dog ANGEL gets a red rash all over her body and all her hair falls out in the summertime...she goes completley bald !!! ive taken her to the vets every summer and theyve ran tonnes of tests, but have no answers !! as after her hair falls out the rash dissappears.

does anyone have any clues to why this happens?

Angel is an only pet and she is desexed and always wormed and vaccinated , she is always healthy, i have always used hypoallergenic cleaning items in the home , and she is bathed in special hypoallergenic dog shampoo from the vets once a year in the winter only and she only gets fed hypoallergenic dog food.. im always buying her 100% baby cotton clothing as she is forever shivering, because she only has a fine seethrough coat of fur in the winter months.

Sure sounds like an allergy to me. Have they tried steroids? I had one that was allergic to grass..if he went out in the spring and summer he would lose his hair everywhere that touched grass and swell up bright pink and itchy. We had to keep him on low dose predinisone half the year. It was a risk but one we decided was worth it as he was suffering without it. Worth a try anyway.. good luck!

What breed of dog is this? If she is a collie (aussie, lassie, etc) or other type of herding breed (but mostly aussie's are affected) are you putting any flea/tick drops on her? If so, this may be a reaction as collie's are highly sensitive to that.

I think the first answer was correct. It is probably a heat rash which then causes the hair follicles to become infected and the hair to fall out. Once the hair falls out and the heat rash heals, the hair is able to regrow. I would think since you have all her medical needs taken care of it's probably not a big deal, especially where there are no other pets around to pass on an infection. Try keeping her out of the sun and in an airconditioned area when it starts to get warm in the summer.

Two things came to my mind when I was reading your question, at first I was saying the dog is just shedding but my dog's allergys really acted up in the summer. He would itch it all off in patches. When I took him to the vet they told me to give him benedryl, he was a med. sized dog if your dog is small I would try childrens benedryl try it see if it helps any but it could be a bad heat rash, you never know. If your vet is not to worried about it I really wouldn't be either. GOOD LUCK (please be careful and don't O.D. your dog)
