My bf got a puppy on Friday. I found out about it when I got home late at night. He said he wanted to surprise me, that's why he didn't tell me about it. I repeatedly told him in the past that I didn't want a puppy because we live in a small one bedroom apartment, and I didn't want to spend the money or time on it. I also told him that we ( actually he, since I won't have any part in taking care of it) cannot afford vet bills if the dog were to get sick. He understood, and he wants to get rid of it for those reasons, but at the same time he still wants to keep it. I want it out, he's pooping everywhere, and I LOATHE the smell of dog. It's a shame, the dog is cute as hell, but we just don't really have the resources or the room for it. I also work in a restaurant and don't want to have dog hair (it's a husky/chow mix) or dog smell on my clothes when I go to work.
Anyway, would it be a great surprise if I took the puppy to the SPCA or something like that while he was at work?
Getting rid of a puppy...?
Your BF had no business getting the dog without your consent, period. It was his idea, so you have to make him solve this problem, not just bring the dog to the SPCA yourself. These crisis situation can break and irrepareably damage your relationship.
He might have a friend who can look after "his" dog."
You are obviously not maternal material for this dog to consider bringing him into the fold of your family
For the sake of peace, let him fix what he had started. If you get into the habit of fixing bad (in your way of thinking) decisions of his, that practice will follow the rest of your relationship with him.
Getting rid of a puppy...?
it wouldent really be a good suprise as your bf may have feelins for this dog and may be hurt if you did so however if you was to tell him your plans and that you are just thinking of the welfare of the pub then he might just understand
Getting rid of a puppy...?
Sounds like there are more issues here than just a pup! Your local humane association or animal shelter can find the pup a good home...sounds like it would be better off, too!
Getting rid of a puppy...?
I wouldn't just get rid of the puppy when he's gone. Make the decision together and let him know what you are doing and when you are doing it. I commend you for admitting you don't have the time or resources to care for this puppy. The sooner you get him to shelter the sooner he can find a home, and not for nothing the breeds he is mixed with can become quite large.
Getting rid of a puppy...?
I would try to find it a home first. Usually Craigslist.com or backpage.com works. Don't sell it for an outrageous amount of money, just concentrate on finding the best home.
Taking a dog to a shelter is not necessary. Shelters can be a breeding ground for disease (especially in a puppy, more so if not properly vaccinated).
If the puppy is his, let him make the decision. You could cause even more problems for yourself by ditching his dog.
Getting rid of a puppy...?
PLEASE take it to a no kill shelter so it can have a chance to make someone else very happy
Getting rid of a puppy...?
It's his responsibility and he should get rid of the dog.
Getting rid of a puppy...?
poor puppy...put an ad in the paper someone will come and get him real quick. Dont take it to the SPCA where it will be locked up in a little cage all day and night.
Getting rid of a puppy...?
Before you abandon it to a shelter-where it may have to be terminated due to after holiday over crowding- consider a friend or family member who may want a pet. I would recommend trying to find a home for it first that way he might be able to visit the pup now and then. It would be loads better then dropping it off and receiving a bill later for its destruction. Good Luck!
Getting rid of a puppy...?
How about a compromise...instead of a dog, how about a differrent pet that you would both enjoy and that you can both afford?? Sit down and have an open conversation about it. There are lots of options. Also, I'm sure the SPCA could use volunteer dog walkers...he could "own" 100's of dogs and not have the expense, etc and still be doing a great service. Taking the dog to the SPCA is the right thing to do, but I think it needs to be a mutual decision (just my OPINION)
Getting rid of a puppy...?
I am in the "Pets" section because I know dogs and cats, I am not a relationship expert. That said, I don't think that this "surprise" would be beneficial to your relationship with your boyfriend. I agree that you should not keep the dog, but taking him to the shelter behind your bf's back is not the solution. As one who has just been on the receiving end of an unwelcome surprise, empathize with him.
Getting rid of a puppy...?
You are making the right decision. Remember that puppy's grow quickly - Huskys are big dogs and will need a lot of space and a lot of walking!
There is no reason it couldn't be advertised in your local paper - you can at least get your money back! It should go to a home that has the inclination to give it what it needs.

ask friends to own it
Getting rid of a puppy...?
Your boyfriend didnt take into consideration YOUR feelings on a dog when he insisted on surprizing you, but dont do the same for him. If I were you, I would ask him where he got the dog, and contact them ASAP to ask if they can give a refund, or just take the dog from you. (if the money spent on the dog wont break you if you dont get it back)
I understand about not wanting dog hair on your work clothes.
Some people just arent dog people.
Dont let the cuteness of the dog change your mind.
you can speak to your boyfriend about taking the puppy back while you still can, (dont torture the dog and take it to the SPCA) and that you can possibly speak about getting one together in the near future.
He doesnt have to know how near... maybe it is when you are married, maybe it is when you get a bigger place, maybe it is when funds arent such an issue.
If he is still with you later at any of these points, then make sure you put alot of thought into it.
What if you two split up... who is keeping the puppy? You dont want to be stuck with a dog you didnt want in the first place if he up and leaves you.
Sorry for even thinking of him leaving you, I just think of the worst side of things too.
Good luck, and dont act as if you are getting revenge on your boyfriend, or he may go out and get another dog at a later date without your consent.
Getting rid of a puppy...?
Clearly the puppy is not wanted in the home. Please take him somewhere where he can be offered as the adorable pet someone wants. All dogs deserve to be loved. And if you think you don't like him now as a cute puppy, just wait until he gets big and starts tearing up everything you own.
