I have had my dog since Aug, so he is still a puppy---a 100 lb puppy! He is a Newfoundland and not yet 9 mths old. He is shedding his puppy fur and it is near IMPOSSIBLE to get it out of my carpet. We are wanting to get hardwood to elimenate this problem. However, until then our carpet looks terrible with black dog hair everywhere! My vacuum won't pick it up entirely and neither will my shop vac. Any suggestions on how to get this up off my carpet! Help!

A push broom with stiff bristles.

Get a masking tape pet hair roller or use a damp sponge mop.

Elbow grease. Get on your hands and knees with a damp scrub brush and start brushing. It may be a good idea to have the shop vac handy to suck up what you brush up. That has worked for me.

Try a rubber brush. But is may take while. I have only seen hand rubber brushes. It works well for my car seats.

If you have the time....you can roll a sticky lint roller, or I saw this on some talk show-rub a dryer sheet (bounce or whatever) over the fabric and it can pull it up. Or just buy a Kirby---I had no idea how much dog hair was in my carpet till i bought one last month!!

use a vacuum

Get some rubber gloves, like the kind you would use to wash dishes. Rub the carpet with your gloves on and the hair will "ball up" and then you can either throw it away or use the shop vac to suck it all up!! I have two dogs and this method seems to work really well.

Dyson Animal vacuum. It picks up all of it! I love mine!

1. Make sure you brush your dog twice That will keep his coat healthy and pick up any excess hair before it hits your carpet
2. Make sure you're feeding him a premium food. That will help a lot with a healthy skin and coat and will cut down on excess shedding.
3. A shop vac is great but not a very powerful vaccum. You're going to have to spend a lot of money on a Kirby or Dyson - which you shouldn't since you're getting rid of your carpet or you're going to have to spend some time w/ duct tape.
Get some duct tape or other sticky material and that will lift a lot of the hair from the carpet. It's very time consuming.
Good Luck

The best way I found is to put on a clean pair of trainers and then rub the soles in one direction only against the grain of the carpet. The rubber soles are excellent for picking up hairs and keeping them together, then you can either throw the ball of hair away, or put outside, so birds can use it to build a nest. Sounds a little gross, try it though, works like magic! Good luck with your puppy.

We use the grooming brush or get a scrub brus with a handle. Yes we brush the carpet you will have to clean out the bursh almost every swipe but it works.

Get a rubber broom, that will definitely do the job. you can buy this at your local pets store.
Or... do it the in expensive way (which take a little longer) use one of those rubber gloves (put it on your hand) and go across the carpet in a scraping motion. that also work with cloth and furniture.

If your vacuum is not cutting it, you may need to look into a more powerful vacuum. I have a Eureka Boss SmartVac that advertises to be 60% more powerful than Dyson. I vacuum daily (we just got a Golden Retriever puppy). A less expensive solution is to get a Dutch Broom. It looks like a push broom, but is made of rubber. Use it on your carpet and upholstered furntiture to gather stubborn hairs. I found my Dutch Broom at Target (it should be with other brooms, mops, etc.). I don't remember exactly what I paid, but it was definitely under $10.
Newfoundlands are some of the heaviest shedders out there! Dog hair will be a way of life for you as long as you have him. Switching to hardwood floors is smart and should help make cleanup easier. Good luck!

My Dyson is the best thing that has happened in my house of 2 hairy dogs. I have also found a toilet brush will do the trick in corners (a new one of course)

My steam cleaner does a very nice job of rolling dog hair into wet nasty clumps that I can pick up easily. Just remember to vacum before you steam clean or your steam cleaner wont last very long.
