He is a 150lb black lab, who, for three years was an outside dog. In Dec. we brought him inside. He always had this dry looking spot two inches from the base of his tail (on top) Since he has been inside he chews his tail. He acts like it itches him instead of just doing it out of boredom. The hair is coming out and his tail is bald like three inches around and it looks raw. What it going on? How can I stop it?

My dog had the exact same thing. The vet said he had allergies, he put him on some pills and a special shampoo. That may be the case for your dog. Something else that works is hydrocortizone spray. You can buy it at most grocery stores. But you need to take him to the vet to make sure he doesn't have mange.

Have you taken him to see a veterinarian? If you haven't, you need to. The most likely cause is either Fleas, or allergies. But it is possible that he could have any number of skin conditions, like ring worm, mites, skin infection etc. But either way, he needs to be properly diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian.

my pit has the same problem. and no its not a poor diet problem. i give meat , chicken, vegies everything to my dog. its an allergy. contact the vet. its not a serious thing. dont worry =)

YOU NEED TO TAKE HIM WITH YOUR VET. TO CHECK WHAT IS GOING ON, FOR EXAMPLE MAYBE HE HAS FLEAS, SOME TIMES THEY HAVE FLEA ALLERGY, ONLY ONE FLEA BITE CAN CAUSE A REALLY BAD REACTION, THEN SECONDARY SKIN INFECTION BECAUSE HE STILL LICKING OR CHEWING HIS TAIL, ETC. HE NEEDS HELP, ANTIHISTAMINES, AND SOME TIMES ANTIBIOTICS AS WELL, AND MUST LIKE HE NEEDS TO WEAR AN E-COLLAR TO STOP LICKING HIS TAIL
